The Detroit Aria Competition is proud to present an exciting event that celebrates the timeless art of opera while also pushing for a more diverse and inclusive representation of this art form. We recognize that opera has historically been dominated by European men, and we believe that it is our responsibility to bring attention to the voices that have been ignored for too long.

Our goal is to make the inherited repertoire of opera relevant in today's world, by encouraging performers to retell the stories of the canon to fit modern perspectives. We strongly encourage performers to bring their unique points of view to their performances, allowing them to bring fresh interpretations to some of the most beloved operatic works.

Furthermore, we are thrilled to announce that we will award a special prize to a performer who embodies these values, recognizing the contribution of artists who seek to broaden the diversity and inclusivity of the art form.

The 2023 Detroit Aria Competition will take place on Saturday, April 29th, at 5pm at Christ Church Detroit. The competition is open to performers across different age groups, with the Rising Star (16-21) category awarding $250, the Young Artist (22-29) category awarding $300, and the Emerging Artist (30+) category awarding $500. There will also be prizes awarded for the Audience Choice, the MODO MIROR, and the performer who embodies the values of diversity and inclusivity.

We are honored to have a panel of distinguished judges, including Dr. Brandon Waddles from WSU, Emilee Syrewicze from Opera Grand Rapids, Danielle Wright from Opera MODO, and Steve McGhee from Opera MODO. Applications are due April 10th and should be submitted via Yaptracker.

Come and join us for an unforgettable evening of music, art, and celebration! We hope to see you there.
